Well finally time to build my “new” home NAS. Got the 14TB drives and can’t commit to an official build. Was considering PowerEdge R730xd but decided too noisy and hot. The question is what would you find more interesting? Do a hackjob and turn an HP Z440 into my next server or do I do a custom build in a PC case? I’d love to use the custom build board in the rack case but I don’t want to spent the money on a 4U compatible 2011 heatsink. The other thing is if I go with the HP Z440 replacement parts are cheaper and easier to find.
What should my next homelab NAS be for remote backups? Hack job Z440 or something nice?
